West Virginia's Chris Neild just missed out on a dubious honor in the NFL Draft, but he still achieved the ultimate goal -- a selection by a pro team.

The last player selected in the NFL Draft earns the title of "Mr. Irrelevant", along with some pretty nice consolation prizes. West Virginia nose tackle Chris Neild fell one slot short of that somewhat dubious distinction, but can still claim the honor of being an NFL draftee.

Neild, picked by the Washington Redskins with the 50th selection in the seventh round (#253 overall), was the fourth Mountaineer taken on the final day of the draft. His pick helped WVU total the most draftees in a single year since 2000, when Anthony Becht, Jerry Porter, Barrett Green and Mark Bulger were taken.

A stalwart in the middle of the line for West Virginia, Neild appeared to be a safe bet for a pick by a team looking for an interior line presence. However, questions about his quickness off the line dropped him to the last round, where the Redskins finally selected him.

His productivity on college fields, however should translate well to the professional level. He had 130 tackles over an excellent four-year career at WVU, He had six sacks and 11 tackles for loss, and also had an interception two pass break-ups from his nose tackle spot.

At the NFL Combine, Neild checked in at 6-2 and 319 pounds. He had a 40-yard dash time of 5.12 seconds, but did record 30 repetitions in the bench press.

Ateam that employs a 4-3 defense, the Redskins have Anthony Bryant, Albert Haynesworth, Joe Joseph and Ma'ake Kemoeatu on the roster. Haynesworth is not expected to return. Washington selected Clemson defensive lineman Jarvis Jenkins in the second round.
