Ready For A Bigger Role

Andrew Buie

West Virginia sophomore running back Andrew Buie had an up-and-down freshman season.

He struggled with injuries throughout, as he failed to understand which he could fight through and others that he needed to talk with trainers about.

Despite that, he was still able to step up in Dustin Garrison's place with he went down with a knee injury prior to the Orange Bowl. Buie started the game and provided a spark including an eye-catching play in which he stayed on his feet following a tough tackle in the first half.

"That game was just a confidence builder for me. Last year, I was just learning the offense and had to play right away. I tended to play a little bit slower, because I didn't want to mess up," Buie said. "This year, it's the second year, we know everything that's going on and it allows me to play a whole lot faster."

Buie was a Scout.com top 50 running back a year ago after rushing for 1,782 yards on 211 carries with 26 touchdowns as a senior at Trinity Christian Academy. That led to handfuls of offers from schools like Arkansas, Auburn, Michigan, South Carolina and Tennessee among others. Buie ended up choosing West Virginia.

Now, Buie said he's more confident and prepared to battle this spring.

"My biggest thing is confidence and just being more comfortable in the offense," Buie said. "It's something that I lacked last year, but this year I just wanted to make sure that I believed in myself and go out there and take advantage of everyday I have." With Garrison out this spring due to his recovery from surgery, Buie and fellow running back Shawne Alston have an opportunity to step up and potentially overtake Garrison for the starting job.

"You never want to work without the intentions of doing something really, really great," Buie said. "I am working to build my confidence, and then I'm hoping it rolls over to the fall and I have a great fall."
