Barely an hour after West Virginia's baseball season ended with a 5-4 loss to South Florida on Saturday, WVU athletic director Oliver Luck announced Greg Van Zant would not return for a 19th season as head coach.

“Greg has spent a total of 26 years with the Mountaineer baseball program, including the last 18 as head coach, and we appreciate his many years of service to West Virginia University,” Luck said in a statement. “During his time here, he has contributed to our baseball program as a student-athlete, assistant and head coach, and we wish him the best.”

Van Zant had a 528-451-1 career record during his time leading the Mountaineers. His final team finish 23-32 and 9-18 in the Big East Conference. The loss to the Bulls on Saturday, combined with results elsewhere in the conference, prevented WVU from reaching the Big East tournament.

The university's statement indicated a "national search for a new baseball coach at WVU will begin immediately."
