On Friday, Geno Smith saw his name go up on the lists of two more preseason watch lists. The first, The Manning Award, named five Big 12 quarterbacks to its list. The Manning Award Watch List is being announced by conference in conjunction with each league’s media days.
The overall Manning Award Watch List will include 25 of the top quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2012 season. The winner will be announced after the bowls in January and will be honored at a ceremony in New Orleans.
Smith put together an outstanding 2011 campaign. The senior threw for 4,385 yards and 31 touchdowns while completing 65.8 percent of his passes. His completions (346), attempts (526) and yards all set school records, while his yardage total was also the Big East record, as he earned first-team All-Big East honors.
The preseason Watch List recognizes top quarterbacks in the nation based on previous collegiate performance, however, every quarterback in the nation remains eligible for the honor. Additional quarterbacks may be added to the Watch List after the start of the season. The list of 10 finalists will be released on Monday, Nov. 26. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, Jan. 9.
Smith, along with receiver Tavon Austin, was also named to the The Walter Camp Football Foundation “players to watch” roster for its 2012 Player of the Year award. The Walter Camp POY is the nation’s fourth-oldest individual college football accolade. Fifty players comprise the Award's initial watch list.
The Walter Camp POY watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November. The 2012 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 124 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on Thursday, December 6. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s annual national awards banquet on January 12, 2013 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
