Aggressive Performer

Despite a "tweak" during early warm-ups, Damian Nicholson performed well at West Virginia's football camp on Saturday. Did the return visit change his recruiting outlook?

Nicholson is an aggressive defender who goes all out when he gets on the field. That was again on display Saturday, when he flew around during individual and one-on-one drills despite suffering a slight problem early in the session.

I kind of tweaked my groin running my 40," he said after returning home from the camp. "It was o.k., but when I would break down or cut it hurt. It seems like it bothers me when I make the transition from playing on grass to playing on turf."

Nicholson still participated in all of the drills, and thought he "did pretty good, but not my best."

"I still think I was one of the top guys out there," he added.

In addition to excellent work at defensive back, where he broke up a couple passes and picked off two more, Nicholson also took a few reps as a wide receiver.

"I asked Coach Roberts if I could take a few reps at receiver, and he said that was fine, to do what I wanted to do. I've been doing that at most of the camps I've been to, but today I did all of the drills with the defensive backs, so I asked to run a few at wide receiver," he noted.

Nicholson looked solid at wideout, catching the ball cleanly away from his body, but it was on defense where he shone. He jammed receivers off the line and played very physically with them throughout routes.

"I like being physical, he admitted with a laugh. "I'm a strong guy, and I have a strong upper body. I like getting into press coverage."

Roberts apparently liked the performance as well, as Nicholson said he got positive feedback from the Mountaineer assistant.

"I like the way he coaches, and I like his intensity," Nicholson said. I talk to him all the time. I also got to meet Dana Holgorsen for the first time. He said he was glad to see me and see what I could do."

While Nicholson's experience was nothing but positive, it didn't appear to change his recruiting plans.

"I'm still keeping my options open," he said. "In the next two weeks I will try to visit ECU and Liberty. I don't have a timetable for a decision."
