Al-Rasheed Benton is the 16th player to commit to West Virginia in the Class of 2013. He had offers from Maryland, Penn State, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia, and Kansas, among others. He had early strong interest in Penn State, but later dropped the Nittany Lions in favor of Arizona State, Pitt, Temple, Syracuse and WVU.
The Mountaineers impressed Benton on his visit during Baylor weekend, who was looking for a college environment different from the difficult area in which he grew up.
Benton is the third linebacker on WVU's current commit list, joining Darrien Howard and Hodar Christian as prospects on the second level of the defense. Elijah Wellman and Isaac McDonald also play the position in high school, but they are targeted for fullback and safety, respectively, when they begin their college careers.
We will have more from Benton later this afternoon.
