Nine Big 12 teams are in action, with four conference battles and the final non-conference game of the year filling the schedule

WHY PUNT?

Big 12 teams have converted 52 of their 98 fourht down tries this season -- yielding a success rate of 53%. Oklahoma and Kasas State are each 2-2 this season, but Baylor is the most efficient, having turned 10 of 11 tries into first downs.

SCORING FROM EVERYWHERE

Through the first eight weeks of the season, Big 12 teams have posted 36 scoring plays of 50-plus yards, including 15 of over 80 yards.

RETURN STRENGTH

Eight conference teams are averaging more than ten yards per punt return, led by Kansas State's 26.2 yard average.

PLAYING EXTRA

The triple overtime thriller between Texas Tech and TCU marked the fourth league game in Big 12 history to be decided in three extra periods. The Big 12 record is four OTs, which occurred in 2011.

PICKS

  • TCU starts a road swing that takes them to Oklahoma State and then West Virginia, but the Cowboys will be uppermost on their minds this week. Bot temas have lost their starting quarterbacks from the start of the season, but the Horned Frogs seem to have weathered the storm a little better. That should carry them to a win over T. Boone's boys.

  • Texas Tech at Kansas State offers some interesting match-ups. Can the Red Raiders' stout defense slow Kansas State's devastating attack, or force some mistakes from the crisp Wildcat attack? If this game were in Lubbock, the temptation would be to pick an upset, but K-State just doesn't beat itself, and doesn't figure to start in a high-profile home encounter.

  • A month agoTexas-Kansas figured to be a laugher. Now? Not so sure. The Jayhawks are on the short end of the talent stick, but are the Longhorns capable of pulling their team together? The win at Baylor should have given them enough push to get over the top in this game.

  • Iowa State's homestanding defense and newfound offensive punch should be enough to counter anything Baylor can throw at it. Will the Baylor - Kansas game determine who finishes in the league cellar?

  • Oklahoma faces Notre Dame in what many are viewing as a referendum on the Irish's suitability for a national championship berth. We'd rate that with about the same chance of Lyndon LaRouche winning the next presidential elections. The Sooners are on a roll.
