Big 12 Preview: Week Eleven

The fight for bowl eligibility and positioning continues with five Big 12 league games on Saturday.

SPECIAL RETURNS

WHile the Big 12 has earned its reputation as a passing league (it leads all FBS leagues with a combined pass efficiency rating of 147.3), it also excels in special teams returns. League unites are averaging 22.9 yards per kickoff return and 12.9 per punt retun -- again, both tops in the nation.

FIGHTING FOR BOWLS

Five league teams (Oansas State, Texas, Oklahoma, TCU and Texas Tech have qualified for bowl games. Two more squads (Iowa State and either Oklahoma State or West Virgina) would qualify with wins on Saturday.

SCORING RACE

Three of the top four scorers in the league are non-kickers. Oklahoma State's QUinn Sharp (11.8 ppg) holds a narow lead over K-State's Collin Klein (11.3), West Virginia's Stedman Bailey (11.2) and Texas' Joe Bergeron (10.7).

PICKS

  • Kansas travels to Texas Tech, appearing for all the world to be a worn out team. A trip to Lubbock is not like a spa visit, so the Red Raiders are the pick.

  • Texas hosts Iowa State in a game that would keep the Longhorns in sole possession of third place in the league with a win. Is that enough motivation? Perhaps not, but UT's offensive talent should be the difference.

  • Oklahoma hosts Baylor, which revived itself last week with a win. Unfortunately that victory was over Kansas, so it likely didn't do much to help the Bears prepare for OU's talent. The Sooners win to run the series record to 21-1.

  • West Virginia's visit to Oklahoma State will test the defensive improvement that the Mountaineers showed against TCU. The Cowboys offense is on an entirely different plane than that of the Horned Frogs, so a pick against the home team isn't in the cards.

  • Kansas State visits TCU with Collin Klein's health in question. Whether he plays or not, the Wildcats have too much talent for the Frogs.
