Xaverian High (Brooklyn) running back Laray Smith never thought he would go to college in the Midwest, and Indiana wasn’t even on his radar a month ago.
Now, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound Smith is a Hoosier.
"I'm going to Indiana," Smith said via text.
Smith signing his binding national letter of intent to play for the Hoosiers, but his exploits won’t be contained on the football field. An accomplished track athlete, Smith will also run for the men’s track program.
He competed at the USATF Junior Olympics in July and was named an All-American in the 200 and 400 meters. He ran a 48.08 in the 400 meters last month.
After missing several games because of an injury early in his senior season, Smith averaged almost 10 yards per carry as a senior.
Smith was also considering Syracuse and Connecticut, but he chose Indiana because of the comfort level he had with the coaching staff and the players in the program.
