Smith, 6-foot-1, 185-pounds, is one of the top prospects in Ohio for 2014, and he explained his motivation for attending last week's combine.
"Every time I step on the field, I'm there to show my talent, whether it's a combine, game or practice, and I'm looking to prove myself against the competition," Smith stated. "I use this type of event to see where I'm at, and what I need to work on for this upcoming season."
"It's also a lot of fun being here with a lot of my teammates, because we all love working out and competing together," he added. "I'm never satisfied with where I'm at, so I'm not happy with a 4.60 forty-yard time, or my 4.0 shuttle time. I'm looking to get bigger, faster, stronger, just like everyone else out here."
"Growing up I was always an Ohio State fan, but I know and respect Michigan as a program because I have teammates there. I plan on visiting Michigan," he explained. "I have two teammates at Illinois, and they love it there, so I'm definitely interested. Coming from Glenville, I also have a teammate at Indiana, and a bunch at Ohio State, so it's great to know I have the opportunity to play in college with friends."
"Marshon (Lattimore) and Marcelys (Jones) have talked about the three of us playing together in college, and that might happen, but then again I might want to go out on my own," he continued. "I'm just not sure yet. I'm interested in all schools right now, and my visits will show me the right school for me. I definitely want to see as many schools as possible this spring, and I'm going to get a list together pretty soon of where I need to go."
Although several players are looking to make their choice of schools before the beginning of their senior seasons, that is not the route Smith intends to follow.
"It's just hard to list a favorite school because I have so many schools I want to see," Smith said. "I also plan on taking official visits in the fall, and announcing on Signing Day, so I have a long way to go before I make my decision. I don't want to rush this process at all, and I don't want to make a quick decision, so I will be taking my time."
