When the Mountaineers have gone "live" in the early portion of spring practice, running back Dustin Garrison said he notices a clear difference: WVU is running the ball far more frequently than it did in the last two seasons.

Safety Darwin Cook discussed last year's defense, the issues that were present and how they were dealt with leading into this season. It's a gut feeling, he admits, but after five years, he said he knows when things are going right and when they are going right. This spring, things are going right, he said.

Quarterback Paul Millard is battling for the starting job, and that's not all that is different this time around. With more reps against the first team defense and a new position coach -- Shannon Dawson, who happened to recruit him to WVU -- there are plenty of things that separate this spring from his first two in Morgantown.

Cornerback Brodrick Jenkins pulled no punches, saying West Virginia focused too much on generating turnovers last year and did so at the expense of some of the fundamentals of good defense. Things are different this year for the defense as a whole and the corners themselves, he said, as position coach Brian Mitchell brings a different perspective to the meeting room.
