West Virginia University women’s track runner Jordan Hamric has been named Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week for her performance at the Stanford Invitational this past weekend.

Hamric shattered the school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and placed seventh in section two of the event with a time of 10:17.58. Hamric broke the previous school record of 10:25.93 set by Susan Davis in 2006 by eight seconds.

The Bruceton Mills, W.Va., native becomes the third track athlete to break a school record this season. Hamric is currently ranked No. 2 in the Big 12 and No. 9 in the country in the steeplechase.

This Week in Baseball

The WVU baseball team will play four games this week … on Tuesday, the Mountaineers will host Marshall at 6 p.m., at Hawley Field in Morgantown … this weekend, the team will travel for a three-game Big 12 series at Baylor … game one on Friday begins at 7:35 p.m., game two on Saturday begins at 4:05 p.m., and Sunday’s finale begins at 2:05 p.m.

Last Week in Baseball

The Mountaineers went 5-0 last week, defeating Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday, before sweeping New Orleans in a four-game series at Hawley Field … WVU outscored the opposition 48-17 in the five victories.

Senior catcher Alan Filauro batted .533 (8-for-15) during the week with two runs, one home run and seven RBIs … against New Orleans, junior first baseman Ryan McBroom went 5-for-12 with seven runs, three homers and four RBIs … he had three homers in three-consecutive games, all solo blasts … McBroom also notched the game-winning run in game four with an RBI single … junior left fielder Jacob Rice went 7-for-15 with six runs, four doubles and five RBIs against New Orleans … the pitching staff continued to produce, finishing with a 1.50 ERA against the Privateers … junior righty Corey Walter pitched a complete game, allowing one run on five hits with eight strikeouts in 9.0 innings.

The West Virginia University track and field team will split up next weekend, with the jumpers heading to the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala., on April 5-6, while the rest of the team travels to the Don Frail Invitational in Marietta, Ohio on April 6.

Four Mountaineers headed to the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., on Friday, Mar. 29 … the team competed against more than 3,300 athletes and 100 collegiate teams in the 29th edition of the meet.
