Multimedia Recap: WVU - Oklahoma Game Two

Posted May 4, 2013

West Virginia rallied from a tough 4-3 Friday loss to Oklahoma with a 9-3 rout of the Sooners on Saturday.

Midway through Saturday's game, WVU's dugout seemed a bit down. Even with the early lead the Mountaineers gained, the Mountaineers didn't seem their usual exuberant selves. Heads weren't hanging, though, and when Ryan Tuntland blasted a two-run homer in the sixth to provide a 4-2 lead, it was just another example of the grittiness that defines this 2013 team.

Afterward, head coach Randy Mazey sounded the common theme -- this team, no matter what happens, simply doesn't give up. He discussed a post-Friday game chat with his players, and also credit the energy that the crowds across the state have provided to his team.

WVU starting pitcher Dan Dierdorff turned in another solid performance on the mound. The senior pitcher struck out eight batters and didn't allow OU a big inning, limiting them to single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh. Only two of those were earned, and he also helped his cause by walking just one batter.

Afterward, Dierdorff credited a talk with Mazey that highlighted a key change in his approach to pitching, and noted that was the biggest factor in his two excellent outings the last two weeks.
