Big 12 Preview: Week Three

Big 12 Preview: Week Three

Big 12 action kicks off on Thursday this week, so it's an early launch for the weekly preview of football action in the most balanced league in the nation.

ONE IF BY LAND...

Forty-three of the Big 12's 81 touchdowns from scrimmage have come on the ground. It will be interesting to see how long the ground game holds sway over aerial assualts in terms of touchdowns scored.

GOING FOR BROKE

Oklahoma State has already faced seven opponent conversion tries on fourth down. Foes have been successful on six of those -- one of the few areas in which the Cowboys have not been successful so far this year.

RIDICULUS PACE

Baylor is off this week, and Big 12 officials are glad. BU has scored 17 touchdowns on offense this year, and all but one of those drives consumed fewer than two minutes. The Bears' average time of possession on TD drives is 1:11, requiring just five snaps to find the end zone.

Those numbers are tops in the league, but not uique. Overall, Big 12 teams have 33 scoring drives of 50 or more yards that have taken fewer than two minutes off the clock.

PICKS

Nailing the BYU takedown of Texas was a good ball, but things get a bit tougher this week.

  • TCU and Texas Tech meet in a very interesting league battle on Thursday night. The Red Raiders have the more stabel quarterback position, and that should be enough to provide the edge at home.

  • Oklahoma is going to be points challenged this year, but Tulsa is just a shadow of its former strength. The Sooners take the battle of the plains.

  • If West Virginia doesn't thoroughly roll over Georgia State, the Mountaineers have even more serious issues than anyone thinks. They should, but the final score will bear watching.

  • Iowa - Iowa State provides lot of difficulties. Both schools suffered demoralizing opening losses, and in a rivaly game such as this emotion plays a big role. Iowa State lots a lot of players from a year ago, but has the home field. That gives the Cyclones the slightest of advantages, and the pick here.

  • K-State hosts ascendant UMass. That is, ascendant to the ranks of FBS. In no other manner are the Minutemen suited for this game. Willie the Wildcat takes another easy stroll.

  • Kansas, for some reason, travels to Rice for a non-conference game. Given the Owls' ability to score (31 points against Texas A&M), they have a fighting chance here. In fact, it's the upset pick of the week.

  • Oklahoma State will name the score against Lamar. In fact, we'll help the Cowpokes. Sixty-two sounds about right.

  • Troubled Texas is in a difficult situation as it hosts Mississippi. Te Rebels got some Vanderbilt gifts in their opening-week win, but Texas isn't likely to be so generous. Te Rebs are certainly capable, but somehow Texas will right the ship, at least for this week, and earn a home win.
