West Virginia University women’s soccer senior forward Frances Silva has been named the Varsity Sport Report Athlete of the Week.

Silva led the Mountaineers with six points on their way to defeating Richmond and Wright State. She tallied her sixth assist of the season on Friday night against Richmond, centering a pass to sophomore Kelsie Maloney three-yards in front of the Spider goal.

On Sunday against Wright State, Silva became the sixth player in program history to record the program-best three assists in a single match. She assisted goals by junior forward Kate Schwindel, redshirt freshman Carly Black and sophomore midfielder Amanda Hill all in the first half. Silva’s nine assists this season ranks her fifth in program history for a single season.

Silva netted her sixth goal of the season midway through the second half against the Raiders on Sunday. Sophomore forward Kailey Utley made a run into the WSU box and centered a pass to Silva, who beat the keeper on the right post.

Silva leads the Big 12 Conference with 21 points this season. WVU opens Big 12 play on Friday, Sept. 27, at Oklahoma State.

The West Virginia University tennis team will open up its 2013 fall season at the Air Force Academy Invitational in Air Force Academy, Colo. This is the first season under new coach Miha Lisac.

No. 21 West Virginia begins Big 12 Conference play at Oklahoma State (4-2-3) on Friday, Sept. 27, at 8 p.m. ET ... the Mountaineers (6-2-2) continue their road trip on Sunday, Sept. 29, at Baylor at 1 p.m. ET.

Last Week in Women’s Soccer

WVU finished its nonconference schedule with two home wins over the weekend ... the Mountaineers blanked Richmond 2-0 on Friday, Sept. 20, for their fourth shutout of the season ... WVU beat Wright State, 4-1, on Sunday, Sept. 22.

The Mountaineers will continue a five-game homestand with two games this week at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … on Wednesday, Sept. 25, WVU will host Penn State at 7 p.m. … WVU will then open Mid-American Conference play on Sunday, Sept. 29, hosting Akron at 7 p.m.

Last Week in Men’s Soccer

West Virginia fell 2-1 in overtime to Michigan on Saturday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

Notes & Quotes

West Virginia was trailing for the entire match before sophomore Majed Osman tied the game at 1-1 with only 17 second remaining in regulation … sophomores Zak Leedom and Ryan Cain earned assists on the goal … Osman is now tied with junior Andy Bevin for the team lead with four goals … the Wolverines held the majority of the possession throughout the game, including a dominant performance in the first half, outshooting the Mountaineers 11-3 … Michigan finished the game with a 14-13 edge in shots and a 12-7 advantage on corner kicks.

Coach Marlon LeBlanc: “We were awful, absolutely terrible. I’ve never been as disappointed in a start to a game as I was tonight. We were lethargic, we did things we don’t typically do, and it was a terrible start to the game. I have to take as much responsibility as they do. They weren’t prepared properly.”

West Virginia puts its 13-1 record on the line as it opens Big 12 Conference play against Kansas State (12-1) at the WVU Coliseum on Friday, Sept. 27, at 6:30 p.m.

Last Week in Volleyball

The Mountaineers went 3-0 over the weekend on their way to winning the Gold & Blue Player’s Challenge at the WVU Coliseum ... sophomore setter Brittany Sample was named the Challenge’s Most Valuable Player, recording two double-doubles, including a 42-assist, 25-dig effort in the win over Georgetown on Friday night.

The Mountaineers conclude nonconference play 13-1 … WVU won all three nonconference tournaments it competed in this season … the Mountaineers are 7-0 at home … Sample is fourth in the Big 12 in assists per set.

Coach Jill Kramer: “We pulled through at the end. We were really focused on the execution of our gameplan. When you saw us execute the gameplan, you saw success. When we didn’t communicate well and failed to execute, you saw some struggles.”
