As noted in our column today previewing potential signees, West Virginia made something of an unexpected pickup when another junior college defensive back committed and signed.

West Virginia received a surprise on the first day of the mid-year signing period for early enrollees when Northeastern Oklahoma A&M cornerback Keishawn Richardson tied himself to the Mountaineer program.

"I both committed and signed," Richardson texted

the standout cornerback, who visited West Virginia this past weekend, returned from his trip to name a top three that included the Mountaineers along with Wisconsin and Iowa State. The trip to West Virginia provided an eye-opening experienced.

"It's a beautiful place," Richardson told of his recent visit to West Virginia. "I've never in my life seen anything like it."

For Richardson, he sees both a family atmosphere and the potential for immediate playing time.

“It’s like a family,” he said. “Their record doesn’t show it, but those guys play hard. I can see where I can come in and make a difference in the spring." The 5-foot-11, 175-pound cornerback earned honorable mention to the Southwest Junior College Football All-Conference team at both defensive back and return specialist. He recorded 39 tackles in eight games this season, including two interceptions and nine pass-break ups.

Richardson will have two years to complete his two seasons of eligibility, so he will certainly be given every chance to earn playing time, as he does not have a redshirt year to fall back on. He joins linebacker Edward Muldrow (Copiah-Lincoln, MS) and quarterback Skyler Howard (Riverside C.C., Calif.) as other early signees. Offensive lineman Sylvester Townes (Coahoma C.C., MS) is also expected to sign with WVU during the mid-year period. will have more from Richardson on his decision shortly.
