WVU Opens Spring Practice

Three months after its 2013 season came to a close in Morgantown, the West Virginia football team took to the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility on a snowy Sunday afternoon to kick off spring practice.

In Dana Holgorsen's fourth season as the Mountaineer head coach, he started his third spring with him and his staff working plenty on instruction and focusing on fundamentals.

On the offense, it was the same as usual for the first day of practice. West Virginia will spend the first three days of spring practice without pads in the practice facility. The Mountaineers spent that time working on a lot of footwork and drills working on ball security.

In Tony Gibson's first practice as the WVU defensive coordinator, the Mountaineer defense spent a majority of the time the practice was open to media members to work as a whole unit. The defense worked on getting on and off the field quickly and be in their spots by the time the ball was snapped, a way of continuing to get the team ready for the uptempo pace of Big 12 Conference offenses.

With the start of practice, several injured players were doing laps around the IPF as practice was going on. Quarterback Clint Trickett and offensive lineman Tyler Tezeno were in red on the offense, while linebackers Jared Barber, Wes Tonkery and Shaq Petteway and cornerbacks Nana Kyeremeh and Nana Twum Agyire were in red on defense. Kyeremeh, a redshirt sophomore who sat out last season, still participated in some team drills.

West Virginia released its pre-spring depth chart as well on Sunday and there weren't many surprises. Paul Millard is listed at the top of the quarterback position with Skyler Howard, Logan Moore and Storm McPherson behind him.

Highly touted Pitt transfer Rushel Shell is third on the depth chart behind Dreamius Smith and Wendell Smallwood. Other positions of note on the depth chart come on the defensive side of the ball where K.J. Dillon is listed as the starter at the SPUR linebacker position with Marvin Gross backing him up. Jeremy Tyler is slotted in as the starting free safety in front of Ricky Rumph.

As for the five other newcomers, in addition to Howard, Ricky Rogers is listed as the No. 3 receiver at the "Z" position behind Kevin White and K.J. Myers. Junior college transfer Sylvester Townes is behind Marquis Lucas and Marcell Lazard at right tackle.

On defense, Davonte James - who many had listed at linebacker - was the No. 3 defensive end behind Dontrill Hyman and Noble Nwachukwu while Edward Muldrow and Keishawn Richardson are listed as the backups at SAM linebacker and cornerback, respectively.
