Mountaineers Ready for Big 12 Tournament

When West Virginia takes the floor against Texas Thursday night at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, it will still have some work left to do in solidifying its resume for the NCAA tournament.

The Mountaineers enter the Big 12 Conference tournament with a 9-9 record in conference and have 17 wins overall, and while West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins feels good about his team, but understands that wins this week will be crucial.

"(We need to) definitely win the first one," Huggins said on the Big 12 Coaches Teleconference. "I think if we win two, we'd be in great shape but I think if we can win the first one, that'd be pretty good."

WVU will look to perform at a higher level than it did during the two regular season meetings between the two schools. Now that it's do or die in a tournament setting, there will be plenty of pressure on the Mountaineers to step up when it matters the most, something Huggins thinks his team will be able to handle just fine.

"Their attitude is great," Huggins said. "Obviously it's going to be a little harder for us because we don't have guys. We only have nine guys on scholarships, so we have to play guys heavy minutes, but they're ready. They're excited about playing." Recommended Stories
