West Virginia's coaching staff got an early Christmas present in the form of a commitment from…
First Offer Again Results In Commitment
"West Virginia first contacted me back in March or April," Walko said. "We sent out a highlight tape, and they were the first to offer. They called me at high school when I was working out, and Coach Stewart said I had a full scholarship here, and it all took off after that. "It was a big relief to be offered, and after that I sat down and made a list of what I wanted in a school, and it all came down to where I felt the most comfortable. "It was just the people at West Virginia, Walko said of the final reason for his pick of the Mountaineers. "When I took my official, I felt more comfortable in Morgantown than I did at Blacksburg." As has been well chronicled, Walko's final choice came down to WVU and Virginia Tech. An admitted outdoorsman, he liked the rural nature of both campuses, and had a tough time making his final choice. Unlike many other players, Walko didn't have any childhood favorites to cloud his choice. "Growing up, I didn't really have a favorite college team, I just liked watching football," Walko said. The six-foot five-inch, 290-pound lineman also wasn't concerned about the style of offense the schools he was looking at run. "Through high school, we've had a pretty balanced offense. I've pretty much seen it all, and to me it doesn't matter. I like run blocking and I like pass blocking. If you get a good mixture you can have fun with it." Like most high schoolers, Walko has set improving his strength as his number one priority. "I move my feet pretty well now. I will try to get in the weight room hard and try to get stronger. I might get on the track a little but, but I'll be in the weight room a lot." Walko is WVU's 17th verbal commitment to the Class of 2005. The Mountaineers are expected to sign a full complement of 25 in the class.
