Bird's Contract Not Renewed
Headshot Steve Bird 2003

In a tersely worded release, head coach Rich Rodriguez confirmed that a change would be made on his football coaching staff.

"We certainly appreciate Coach Bird's efforts in helping us build this program. He is a quality coach and person and we all want to wish him the best of luck in the future as he and his family pursue other opportunities," Rodriguez said.

The wide receiver position, which Bird coached, had come under fire in recent years for a lack of productivity. The Mountaineers managed just 1,993 passing yards this year, placing them 104th out of 117 Division I-A teams.
