Gansey scored nine of WVU's first 11 points, and 14 overall in the first half, to help the Mountaineers move out to an early 14-point lead against the host Johnnies. The active Mountaineer forward scored in transition, on drives and from beyond the three-point line in the early barrage.
Gansey's most important points may have come in the second half, however. With WVU leading by just one at 46-45, Gansey sliced down the baseline and executed a beautiful reverse tip-in off a missed West Virginia jumper. To that point, WVU had scored just five points in the second half, and were mired in the depths of another scoring drought. Gansey's tip, while not igniting an scoring explosion, appeared to loosen the Mountaineers' collective collar.
Gansey finished with 18 points on the strength of 8-11 shooting from the field. He was 1-2 from beyond the arc, and made his only free throw attempt. Gansey also had eight rebounds, one assist and one steal, and did not turn the ball over.
