Jones, Turnbull Earn EWL Honors

Posted Apr 2, 2002

National Champion Greg Jones earned a doubleheader sweep of wrestling honors from the Eastern Wrestling League.

The EWL named Jones as its freshman of the year and wrestler of the year for his national championship performance. Jones was 34-2 and won the NCAA and EWL titles at 174-pounds and was also named the EWL tournament's outstanding wrestler after defeating defending national champion Josh Koscheck of Edinboro.

Jones also won championships at the WVU Open and the Navy Classic.

The EWL also named WVU head coach Craig Turnbull as coach of the year for 2001-02.

Turnbull directed the Mountaineers to one of the finest seasons in school history. The season, which included Turnbull's, 200th career victory, included a 12-2 overall record and a 7-0 EWL mark, which was good for the regular season championship. WVU won its second EWL tournament title, which marked the first time that the Mountaineers won the regular season and tournament titles in the same season.

WVU finished 13th at the NCAA tournament, its highest finish since 1998 when the team finished seventh.
