Three Make All-Region

Following the best season in school history, West Virginia has put three players on the NSCAA all-Northeast Region team.

Nick Noble and Jarrod Smith were named to the 2006 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) first team all-Northeast Region team, while teammate Andy Wright was named to the second team.

Noble wrapped up one of the greatest careers in WVU soccer history in 2006. The Damascus, Md., native ranked nationally throughout the season in goals against average (.63) and save percentage (.864). Noble holds career marks at WVU in matches played (80), goals against average (.88), shutouts (37) and minutes played (7,179), while ranking third in career saves (292).

Smith, a native of Havelock North, New Zealand, scored 14 goals in just 15 matches this season to go along with four assists. The senior forward set the BIG EAST single season conference goals record in 2006 with 12 and the single season conference point record with 28. Smith netted 32 goals in four seasons for WVU, tied for fifth all-time in school history. He is tied for third in school history in career matches played with 74.

Wright ranked third on the team with 16 points (five goals and six assists). Recognized as one of the top midfielders in the BIG EAST, the Liverpool, England, native was the only West Virginia player selected to the preseason all-conference team.

All three players were selected to the all-BIG EAST first team in 2006. Noble and Smith are now both eligible for All-America voting as all players selected to their respective all-region first teams move on for consideration.

The Mountaineers have not had an All-America men’s soccer player since Jon Capon in 1981. WVU has just four total All-Americans in program history.
