Filling The Role

Rob Summers

It was, perhaps, the definition of Rob Summers' role on the Mountaineer basketball team -- and also a demonstration of how far he has come.

Early in the second half of WVU's 71-60 win over N.C. State, Summers got the ball near the basket and went up for a layup. When it didn't go in, he controlled it with a tap back toward the hoop. Again it wouldn't fall. Finally, Summers snared the recalcitrant rock and put it up a third time, and this time it found the bottome of the net.

That sort of perseverance and determined effort is what has kept Summers in the starting lineup and on the floor for the Mountaineers during their impressive 6-1 start, and it's just the kind of boost that WVU will have to keep getting from the much-improved senior. Summers finished with just those two points on the evening, but his eight rebounds (including five on the offensive end) two blocked shots, two assists and steal made him a vital cog in the Mountaineers win.

Listen as Summers describes the sequence, jokes about padding his rebounding stats on the play, and discusses the significance of the win.
