West Virginia got on the board early with single runs in the first and second, as Justin Jenkins and Jordon Yost blasted solo home runs to give the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead. That advantage didn't last for long, however, as Maryland tied it with two runs in the bottom of the third, then took the lead with a three-run homer in the next inning.
West Virginia cut into the deficit with a single run in the top of the fifth, but a final matching insurance run in the bottom of the fifth for the Terps accounted for the final score.
WVU starter Levi Maxewll was hit for the loss, giving up five earned runs on four hits. He battled control problems, walking four and uncorking a wild pitch while striking out none. Joe Stupka pitched well in four innings of relief, yielding just one run on four hits. He walked two and hit two batters.
WVU had several multi-hit performers, but couldn't string enough together to put runs together. The Mountaineers left eight men on base, missing several scoring opportunities.
Jenkins was 3-4 and Yost 2-4, while Chris Enourato continued to show his prowess at the plate with a 2-4 evening.
West Virginia continues its non-conference play with a home game against Ohio University on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
