Senior gymnast Janáe Cox and football senior Jay Henry have won the 2007 Red Brown Cup, presented annually to West Virginia University’s most outstanding all-around student-athlete in terms of athletic, academic and civic achievement.

Winners are selected by the WVU Athletic Council. A native of Otisco, Ind., Cox recently finished her career as a three-time NCAA qualifier, earning All-America honors in the floor exercise last month at the NCAA championships. She became the first 2,000 point scorer in school history and was named EAGL gymnast of the week 11 times during her career. The 2007 EAGL Gymnast of the Year and EAGL Most Outstanding Senior Gymnast, Cox owns the school record for highest all-around score (39.675) in a meet and holds the school record with 37 all-around scores of 39.0 or better.

She was a four-time member of the EAGL all-academic team and a three-time NACGC Scholastic All-American. Cox has been active in the community: Boys and Girls Club, Baptist Campus Ministries Outreach Leader, visited area hospitals, Circle of Friends, Read-A-Loud program at area schools and Make a Wish Foundation gymnastics day. She will graduate next May with a master’s degree in elementary education with a social studies specialization.

Henry, a four-year letterman from Tulsa, Okla., was a two-year starting linebacker who finished his career with 181 tackles. He won the Ira Rodgers Award in 2006, the Ideal Mountaineer Man Award in 2005 and the Danny Van Etten Award in 2002. Henry was a part of the winningest senior class in WVU history that finished with a 38-12 record during his career.

Off the field, Henry earned bachelor’s degrees in finance and accounting with a perfect 4.0 GPA. He earned numerous academic honors: National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete, two-time first team Academic All-America, Playboy Scholar-Athlete, Draddy Trophy finalist, BIG EAST football scholar-athlete of the year, BIG EAST academic all-star and Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll. Henry was active in visits to area hospitals, volunteered for Special Olympics and participated in the Read-A-Loud program at area schools.

The award is in memory of Robert “Red” Brown, former WVU coach and athletic director.
