Playoff Bound

Posted Jun 27, 2007

Four West Virginia alumni are alive in the Arena Football League's playoffs this weekend.

Wes Ours (Philadelphia Soul), David Saunders (Columbus Destroyers), Tom Briggs (Tampa Bay Storm) and Jay Taylor (Orlando Predators) helped their teams into the post season, and each will see a fellow alum on the other side of the field when the playoffs open on Friday, June 29.

Taylor will face Ours at 7:30 p.m. on Friday on ESPN as the Soul hosts the Predators, while Saunders and Briggs will square off when the Destroyers visit the Storm on Saturday at noon in another ESPN tilt.

Saunders had 68 catches for 550 yards and 18 scores for the Destroyers in the regular season, both good for second place on the team.

Ours led the soul with 39 carries for 129 yards and eight touchdowns in the pass-happy league. He also had 12 receptions for 112 yards and a score.

Taylor tallied 134 points by converting 101 of 109 extra point tries and 11 of 21 field goal attempts on the AFL's narrow goal posts. That total placed him tenth in scoring among kickers.

Briggs, a defensive standout during his AFL career, had 28 1/2 tackles and five sacks for the Storm during the regular season. The five sacks tied him for the team lead and showed his full recovery from a leg injury that shortened his 2006 season to seven games.
