Men's Soccer Wins At Duke

Posted Sep 15, 2007

True freshman Paul Paradise’s rebound goal in the 76th minute gave the No. 13 West Virginia University men’s soccer team a 1-0 road upset over No. 5 Duke Saturday night before a crowd of 3,981 at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.

The game was the Mountaineers’ second road win over a top 10 team and WVU’s fourth consecutive 1-0 win this season.

“We didn’t play our best game by any means, but we were able to go on the road and get a result,” Head Coach Marlon LeBlanc says. “Certainly our seniors and team captains carried us through tonight.”

Paradise’s goal came courtesy of Mike Anoia, who beat the keeper but hit the post. Paradise then hammered the ball into the back of the net. Anoia picked up an assist on the goal as did Andy Wright who had flicked the ball onto Anoia.

The goal was just the second on Duke senior keeper Justin Papadakis this season.

WVU goalkeeper Zach Johnson recorded three saves to pick up his fourth straight shutout, tying the WVU single-season record. Johnson and the Mountaineer defense held strong despite allowing nine Blue Devil corner kicks.

The Blue Devils outshot the Mountaineers 15-9, but WVU had four shots-on-goal to Duke’s three.

West Virginia improves to 4-1, while defending ACC champion Duke falls to 3-2.

WVU next plays at St. John’s on Sept. 21, at 8 p.m., in the team’s BIG EAST opener.
