Honorary Game Captains Announced

Posted Oct 18, 2007

West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez has named former Mountaineer running back Garrett Ford Sr., defensive back Brian King, defensive back Steve Newberry and running back Quincy Wilson the honorary captains for the Mississippi State game on Saturday, Oct. 20.

Ford lettered from 1965-67 and was the first Mountaineer to top 1,000 yards in a single season and 2,000 career rushing yards. He ran for 1,068 yards and was a second team All-American in 1966 under Coach Jim Carlen. The Washington, D.C., native tallied 2,166 career yards, the WVU career rushing record at the time, with eight 100-yard games and 120 career points, before being drafted by the Denver Broncos. Ford currently serves as the Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services.

King lettered at West Virginia from 2000-2003, starting three years in the secondary. The Damascus, Md., native was a Sports Illustrated honorable mention All-America and first team all-BIG EAST selection as a senior. King holds the WVU career passes broken up record with 54. He also had 10 career interceptions, none more important than his game-ending interception in the end zone at nationally-ranked Virginia Tech in 2002.

Newberry lettered at WVU from 1980-83 and was a teammate of Rodriguez under legendary coach Don Nehlen. The Peterstown, W.Va., native had a school record 20 interceptions in his career and had 20 pass breakups, meaning he picked off half the passes he could touch. He also recorded 191 career tackles and played in two bowl wins: the 1981 Gator and 1983 Hall of Fame.

Wilson was a four-year letterman at West Virginia from 1999-2003. The Weirton, W.Va., native ran for 1,380 yards in 2003 as a senior and was named to the AP All-America third team. The 2003 first team all-BIG EAST selection was a Doak Walker semifinalist and had 10 career 100-yard rushing games. Wilson piled up 2,608 career rushing yards good for sixth all-time in school history.
