The Big East Championship Is Coming Soon
The Big East Championship Presented by Aeropostale will be here in less than three weeks. In fact, three weeks from today the quarterfinal round will be played at Madison Square Garden. Teams don't want to start playing until Thursday's quarterfinals because that means they have earned a first-round bye and will only have to play three games to win the tournament crown. Only Syracuse in 2006 won the Big East title by winning four games. If the season ended today, Georgetown, Louisville, Connecticut and Notre Dame would be the top four seeds, earning first-round byes. The teams currently from fifth through 12th place are separated by only three games in the loss column.
Hot Huskies Are Winning The Close Ones
Connecticut has won 10 games in a row, easily the longest current winning streak in the Big East. As hard as it is to win 10 games in a row at this time of year, the Huskies have won with clutch play in close games. Included in the 10-game streak is a run of eight straight Big East wins, all of which have come by seven points or less. UConn puts its streak on the line in Philadelphia at the Wachovia Center against Villanova Saturday at noon ET on ESPN.
RPI Rankings Rate Big East Teams Highly
It's true that the RPI Rankings are used only as a guide for the NCAA Basketball Committee as it considers which teams to select for the NCAA Championship field. But the RPI "guide" certainly leads one down a path to believe that the Big East has some of the nation's top squads. In today's rankings, the league has six teams in the top 24 – Georgetown 8th, Connecticut 11th, Louisville 14th, Marquette 16th, Pittsburgh 21st and Notre Dame 24th.
