Late season surges are important for teams on the NCAA bubble in making the tournament, so why wouldn't the same be true for players vying for league honors?

That may well have been the case for WVU's Joe Alexander, who capped a great early March by being named to the all-Big East first team. Alexander was the lone Mountaineer to appear on the Big East honor lists.

The junior forward averaged 16.2 points and 6.1 rebounds during the 2007-08 regular season, but saved his best performances for West Virginia's late-season games. Over the last three contests, Alexander averaged 31 points and 8.7 rebounds as he helped WVU sew up an NCAA bid.

On the season, Alexander recorded 73 assists and 46 blocks, and averaged 80.8% from the free throw line.
