Second Freshman Honor For Gyorko

Posted Jun 9, 2008

Freshman second baseman Jedd Gyorko nabbed his second national award with his selection to the Pro-Line Athletic/ National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) 2008 Freshman All-American first team.

The team, comprised of 34 standout freshman, covers 15 conferences, seven conference championship teams, and 11 conference “Rookie of the Year” winners.

“This is another outstanding award for Jedd,” WVU head coach Greg Van Zant said. “We are very happy and proud of him. He is very deserving of every award he receives.”

Gyorko hit .409 in his initial college season on the strength of 95 hits. Among those were 17 doubles and eight home runs (two grand slams). He also drove in 63 runs. The Morgantown, W.Va., native was named the 2008 Big East Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Big East second team.

Most recently, Gyorko was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American Team, the second Mountaineer in school history, on June 5th.
