Women's Soccer Earns Ranking

Posted Aug 12, 2008

The West Virginia University women’s soccer team received its first 2008 preseason ranking in a vote of soccer coaches nationwide.

The Mountaineers were tabbed No. 12 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas poll.

Four WVU opponents are ranked in the NSCAA/adidas poll: Virginia (No. 6), Connecticut (No. 11), Tennessee (No. 13) and Santa Clara (No. 22). Today’s poll is the first of 14 rankings throughout the season by the NSCAA.

The Mountaineers return seven starters this season as they look to defend their Big East regular season and tournament titles. Nikki Izzo-Brown begins her 13th season in charge of the Mountaineers and has led her teams to eight straight NCAA tournament appearances.

WVU will play one exhibition match before its season-opener against Towson on Friday, Aug. 22. The Mountaineers will travel to College Park, Md., for a 7 p.m. exhibition match with Maryland on Saturday, Aug. 16.
