BlueGoldNews.com selects the outstanding player and performances from the West Virginia - Delaware State basketball game

Picking this Player of the Game was pretty simple.

Senior guard Alex Ruoff scored 22 first-half points to lead the Mountaineers to a dominating 76-42 win over Delaware State.

Ruoff stayed at the Coliseum shooting for roughly 30 minutes after the arena had cleared following last week's win over Longwood, and it certainly showed in his first-half performance against the Hornets.

In the opening half, Ruoff was 7-10 from the field, 6-9 from 3. He added another trey in the second half to finish with seven for the game, one behind the record set by Frank Young against Villanova in 2007. Ruoff finished with 25 points.

NET BURNERS

  • Freshman point guard Darryl "Truck" Bryant had another strong performance on Tuesday night, his third in as many games. With junior starter Joe Mazzulla battling foul trouble all game, Bryant was again forced into action.

The Brooklyn, N.Y. native finished with 10 points and five assists in 24 minutes. He was 7-8 from the foul line, and turned the ball over just twice.

  • They didn't show too much of it, but the Mountaineers did break out a full-court press for the first time this season. The press started as a 1-2-2 look, but varied in alignment based on how the Hornets were attacking it.

While the press didn't force all of Delaware State's 23 turnovers, it was effective. WVU scored 39 points off of the Hornet miscues.

  • Da'Sean Butler bounced back from a turnover-plagued outing against Longwood with a solid effort against the Hornets. Butler finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists on Tuesday night in 30 minutes.

Butler turned the ball over just once against Delaware State. He had five against Longwood.
