WVU Decks Dukes

West Virginia improves to 7-1 on the season with a sloppy 59-41 win over the visiting Duquense Dukes sunday afternoon.

On a day when West Virginia committed 25 turnovers, the Mountaineers were able to control the boards and notch their sixth win in a row.

West Virginia saw three players score in double figures and two had double-doubles. WVU was once again led in scorring by Liz Repella with 21 points on 7-13 shooting. Repella also grabbed 12 boards. Takisha Granberry chipped in 10 points and 13 rebounds in the win, while senior guard Ashley Powell had another solid all-around game with 10 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.

Repella opened the scoring at the 19:30 mark with a layup, as the Mountaineers once again raced out to a quick 8-2 lead. But the Dukes battled back evening the game at 10-10 with 10:30 left in the first half. The Mountaineers would own a 17-6 scoring advantage over the final ten minutes of the first half and take a 27-16 advantage into the locker room.

In the second half, Repella took over scoring 17 of her points during the final 20 minutes. The Stuebenville, Ohio native hit a trio of three-point jumpers, and extended the Mountaineer lead to 43-22 after her second triple of the day. The Dukes refused to give up, going on an 11-0 run to bring the game to within 10 points. But after a timeout, the Mountaineers answered the challenge and were able to put the finishing touches on the visitors with a 16-8 run to close the game.

West Virginia once again held their opponent to under 30 percent shooting from the field, only allowing the Dukes to hit on 25.9 (15- 58) percent of their chances. The Mountaineers also led the advantage on the glass, outrebounding their opponents 42-27.

WVU now has a six day break for finals before hosting the Indiana Hoosiers at the WVU Colesium on Saturday, Dec. 13, tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
