New York Defensive Back Commits

Posted Dec 18, 2002

New York has provided the Mountaineer football program with some great players in recent years. WVU added to that list today with the commitment of an Empire State defensive back.

Michael Meggett (6-1, 205, 4.5) of Hamilton High School in Brooklyn has committed to WVU. Meggett is a cousin of former NFL running back and return specialist Dave Meggett. A first team All-Conference pick as a safety, he had 81 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 3 caused fumbles as a junior.

After visiting Vanderbilt this past weekend, Meggett decided to pull the trigger and commit to West Virginia.

"I had a great time at Vanderbilt," Meggett told Border Wars. "I like the academics, and I like the direction I think that program is headed. That was my first visit, but if I had to choose right now, I'd say that West Virginia was my leader."

With his size, Meggett could play safety, spur or bandit for WVU. Those positions will be thin next year, with Angel Estrada, Jermaine Thaxton and Arthur Harrison all graduating.

Meggett has an official visit to West Virginia scheduled for January 10.
