It didn't take long for West Virginia's latest football verbal commitment to say yes when he…
Tonkery attended WVU's first junior day, and took in practice on Saturday, Mar. 28. He's also planning to head back to West Virginia for the spring game on April 18, and for summer football camp in June. "On my previous visit, we got together and watched the highlight film, and had the chance to meet all of the coaches," Tonkery said. "We also went down to the weight room, and got a presentation from Mike Joseph, the strength coach. After that, we went out on the field for a while, and then we had individual academic presentations, and then finished up touring the facilities. "I didn't see a whole lot new on my last trip, but I just stayed and watched practice," he continued. "I didn't go through the whole tour again. West Virginia is definitely the school I'm most interested in, but I've gotten letters from Maryland, Tennessee, Alabama and UCLA too. I've visited Tennessee, and I plan on going to West Virginia's camp, and to a combine in Pittsburgh as well as Pitt's camp." A two-way performer at running back and safety for the Indians, Tonkery sees most of his recruiting interest coming as a defender. He thinks his performance is steady on both sides of the ball, but definitely sees himself as a safety on the college level. He racked up 1,320 yards and 21 TDs on offense during his junior season, and added two interceptions and a score as a defender. "I don't think I'm better on one side of the ball than the other, but I would like to play safety in college," said Tonkery, who checks in at six feet, one inch and 180 pounds. "I need to get a little bigger and stronger, and I'll be working on that." NOTES Tonkery recorded a 4.48 40-yard dash time in his most recent testing. He earned first team Class AAA all-state honors as a junior. * * * Tonkery is adding track this year to his already busy athletic schedule, which has included football and basketball throughout his high school career.
