Devine, Williams On National Award Lists

West Virginia footballers Noel Devine and Reed Williams have each made the cut list for a prestigious national honor.

Mountaineer running back Noel Devine is one of 16 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award, which is presented by the Maxwell Football Club to the outstanding college football player in the nation. Devine is one of seven running backs on the list.

The announcement of the winner of the Maxwell Award will be made during the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show that will be broadcast on ESPN on Thursday December 10, 2009. Three finalists for each award will be announced on November 23, 2009 and a second round of voting will take place at that time.

Linebacker Reed Williams is one of ten finalists for the Awards and Recognition Association's (ARA) fifth annual sportsmanship award (www.arasportsmanshipaward.com), which is given to one outstanding NCAA Division 1 collegiate football player who best personifies the spirit of sportsmanship.

To qualify for the award, an athlete must be a starting player or significant contributor on his team; be an athlete in good academic standing; demonstrate great respect for competitors, school, teammates and coaches; show an ability to accept victory and defeat graciously; convey a high degree of humility and integrity; and demonstrate commitment in the classroom and to the community. The finalists were selected via a bline process without names being known.

Williams' list of accomplishments as compiled by the ARA included the following:

"Dean's List, ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American First Team member and double major in finance and marketing, Williams is described as a humble leader with exceptional character who always takes time for fans and children. Despite injuries in 2008, Williams assisted coaches and teammates from the sidelines while giving back to the community Boys and Girls clubs, Special Olympics and other organizations benefiting children."
