Junior guard Liz Repella has been named West Virginia University’s Athlete of the Week for her efforts in guiding the Mountaineers to a 2-0 record last week.

The Steubenville, Ohio, native averaged 14 points and seven rebounds on the week and recorded her 12th career 20-point effort, and second of the season, in the Longwood victory on Dec. 12.

Against the Lancers, Repella tallied 20 points on 6-14 shooting with four 3-pointers, grabbed eight rebounds and tallied five steals in the 74-43 victory.

In the home win against Eastern Kentucky on Dec. 8, she scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds. The Mountaineers defeated the Colonels, 60-40.


Special Notes of the Week

  • Three WVU men’s soccer players were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America all-Northeast Region team. Sophomore defender Raymon Gaddis was tabbed a first-team selection, while redshirt junior goalkeeper Zach Johnson and freshman defender Eric Schoenle earned third-team accolades.

  • WVU women’s soccer player Bry McCarthy will attend the Canadian Under-20 Women’s National Team Camp Dec. 11-20, in Boca Raton, Fla. The freshman is one of 23 players attending the 10-day training camp.


    This Week in Women’s Basketball

    WVU (9-1) takes on Fresno State, Saturday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.

    Last Week in Women’s Basketball

    WVU went 2-0 last week with victories over Eastern Kentucky and Longwood … WVU defeated Eastern Kentucky 60-40 on Dec. 8 … over half of WVU’s points came off of Colonel turnovers, as the team converted 28 EKU miscues into 31 points … WVU relied on fast break (18) and second-chance (14) points, as the team went 40 percent (22-55) from the field and shot 23.1 percent (3-13) from the 3-point line … freshman center Asya Bussie scored a career- and game-best 19 points, including 13 in the second half … forward Madina Ali was the only other Mountaineer in double-figures, tallying 12 points on a 4-for-9 showing from the field; the redshirt-junior was perfect from the free-throw line (4-for-4) … she also ruled the boards for WVU, pulling down a game-best eight rebounds … WVU closed the game on a 17-11 run … WVU then defeated Longwood 74-43 on Dec. 12 … the victory was the team’s seventh-straight win … Liz Repella recorded her 12th career 20-point effort and second of the season with 20 against the Lancers, on 6-14 shooting including 4-9 from 3-point range … three other Mountaineers reached double figures in scoring as junior guards Vanessa House and Korinne Campbell and sophomore center Natalie Burton each chipped in with 10 apiece … Ali posted a game and career-high tying 10 rebounds … the Mountaineers were up 44-16 at halftime, and used a 30-9 run over the final 10 minutes of the first half to seal the victory.

    Repella recorded her 42nd career double-figure scoring game in the Longwood victory … her four 3-pointers moved her into a tie for 10th place on WVU’s career 3-point field goals made list with Jocelyn Branham (1989-92) … Miles has posted at least two steals in every contest this season … Miles has also recorded seven or more assists in five-straight contests and eight of 10 games this season … Mike Carey is just three victories shy of reaching 450 for his career.


    This Week in Rifle

    No. 1-ranked WVU has concluded the first half of its season … the team will resume regular-season action on Jan. 17 and play host to NC State at 8 a.m. at the WVU Rifle Range.

    The Mountaineers (6-0, 3-0 GARC) last defeated No. 2-ranked and GARC foe Kentucky, 4691-4642, on Nov. 21 at the WVU Rifle Range … the team score is believed to be the highest collegiate aggregate total since the NCAA implemented a 60-shot course at the onset of the 2004-05 season … the total is 14 shots better than WVU’s previous school record of 4677, set last year … with wins over the Wildcats in smallbore and air rifle, the Mountaineers remained undefeated in both disciplines … the Mountaineers are off to their best season start since 2003, when they opened the season 8-0 before finishing the year at 11-2.

    The West Virginia University swimming and diving teams will train from Dec. 30-Jan. 8 when they travel to Cocoa Beach, Fla., for a winter training trip … the Mountaineers will face Louisville on Jan. 2 at a time to be determined.

    The Mountaineers started the 2009-10 indoor season with a good showing at the WVU Holiday Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the WVU Shell Building … throughout the competition, six Mountaineers met Big East qualifying standards, including sophomore long jumper Meghan Mock, who saw a first-place finish at 5.58-meters.


    This Week in Wrestling

    The Mountaineers will compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 20 … action in Reno, Nev., will begin at 9 a.m. PT … other competing teams include Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Penn State and Stanford.

    Last Week in Wrestling

    WVU fell to No. 14-ranked Penn State, 33-12, on Dec. 11 … it was the Mountaineers’ home-opening dual meet.

    A total of 1,136 fans piled into the WVU Coliseum to watch the match … freshman Shane Young made his Mountaineer career debut … he scored the first takedown, but ended up falling to seventh-ranked Brad Pataky at 125 pounds … sophomore Colin Johnston (133) earned the Mountaineers’ first team points with a 13-4 major decision over Bryan Pearsall … Johnston is now 8-0 this season … redshirt senior Donnie Jones (165) faced ninth-ranked Dan Vallimont and fell, 4-3 … Jones continuously shot at Vallimont in the third period, but no stalling point was awarded to Jones, giving Vallimont the win … classmate Chance Litton won WVU’s next match at 174 pounds … he defeated Justin Ortega, 5-2, to improve to 7-2 on the year … freshman Cameron Gallaher earned the Mountaineers’ final points at 197 pounds with a win by forfeit.

    “We knew we were in trouble at 141 and 149 pounds. We put a 125-pounder at 141. In two weeks, Brandon Rader and Mike Rowe go in and that makes us much stronger. There was going to be a real momentum shift in that 141- and 149-pound area. Our 157-pounder did a real poor job with his weight management, so we put three in the middle there that really deflated the whole team energy.” - coach Craig Turnbull
