That's not to say, of course, that Casteel doesn't expect excellence from his players, or doesn't think the Mountaineers can be very good. It's simply that the veteran coordinator knows there's more work to do before his group can achieve the levels of play that many foresee for them.
One of the challenges facing Casteel is nagging injuries. Although he wouldn't name names, the roster of players missing time recently, including J.T. Thomas, Pat Lazear, Sidney Glover and Keith Tandy has kept him from getting the entire first team on the field at the same time. While it's true that those players are veterans who aren't greatly hurt by the loss of some practice time, it's also true that the entire unit needs to work together at times in order to fire on all cylinders.
