Chanticleer relief pitcher Kent Altman (1-1) earned his first win of the
season, pitching four innings, giving up one hit and striking out three
batters. Starter Adam Fleet pitched the first four innings, giving up
three runs on six hits, walking five and striking out one. Jarryd
Summers (0-2) dropped his second decision of the season, pitching 2.2
innings, giving up seven runs, two earned, on five hits, walking three.
Coastal Carolina (6-1) scored eight runs on nine hits, while West Virginia (4-3) scored three runs on seven hits and committed three
errors. Jed Gyorko led the Mountaineers with two hits, including a double and an
RBI, and Vince Belnome finished with a team-high two RBIs. David Sappelt
led the Chants with two hits and three RBIs and Scott Woodard and Adam
Rice each finished with two hits. Tommy Baldridge finished with one hit
and two RBIs.
In the second inning, the Chants’ David Anderson reached on a WVU
fielding error by first baseman Joe Agreste, advanced to second on a
wild pitch from Mountaineer starting pitcher Jarryd Summers and scored
on Baldridge’s single to left field. Rice then doubled to left center,
advancing Baldridge to third. Derek Martin grounded out to second,
scoring Baldridge for the second run of the inning. Tyler Bortnick was
hit by a pitch, and he and Rice both scored on Sappelt’s double to left
center. Scott Woodard reached on fielding error by shortstop Tyler Kuhn,
allowing Sappelt to score. Woodard stole second, moved to third on
Summers’ second wild pitch of the inning and scored on a passed ball by
WVU catcher Justin Parks. Coastal added single runs in the third and fourth innings to take an
8-0 lead. In the third, Bortnick walked, advanced to second on C.
Gilmore’s single to left field and scored on Sapplet’s single up the
middle.
In the fourth inning, David Doyle doubled to right field, advanced to
third when Anderson flew out to center and scored when Baldridge flew
out to left field. The Mountaineers cut Carolina lead to 8-3 in the fifth inning. Kuhn
walked to lead off the inning before advancing to third on Gyorko’s
double down the left field line. Belnome doubled to center, driving in
Kuhn and Gyorko, advanced to third on Markel’s ground out to first. He then scored on Yost’s double down the left field line.
The Mountaineers will face George Mason in game four of the Baseball at
the Beach Tournament today at Watson Stadium at 11:30 a.m.
