Minimizing The Mistakes

Elijah Wellman and Jordan Thompson both had opportunities to make huge plays against No. 2 Alabama, but like many within West Virginia's offense, couldn't take advantage of the situation. Here, both players, along with running backs coach JaJuan Seider, delve into the whys and hows of finer execution.

Elijah Wellman is a homegrown West Virginia kid, and knew he had a chance to make an impact on the game last Saturday. Wellman couldn't quite get the handle on Clint Trickett's underthrown pass that would have surely been a touchdown if caught. Although it was a missed opportunity, Wellman isn't dwelling on the play, and seems excited to get back on the field for Saturday's night game against Towson.

Like Wellman, Jordan Thompson also had his own regrets. Thompson dropped a key third down pass, and took a risky chance in fielding a punt inside WVU's own 10-yard line. The junior wide receiver, like most, is trying to block Saturday's score out of his mind while trying to capitalize on the momentum and success. Thompson, with all smiles, talked about his approach to Saturday's home opener.

Seider, whose backs had success early before the Mountaineers went away from the ground game while trailing, spoke about the offensive scheme of having a run-pass option to nearly every play. Seider also spoke about Wellman, and how close the Mountaineers came to forcing Alabama to do something it didn't want to do, namely go to the passing attack when behind.
